A term that is gaining usage, Expert Generalists are becoming more and more valued and sought after in today's business world by corporations. SME's, non-profits, & start-ups.

Sufficed to say, I completely agree with these articles, I am proud to consider myself an Expert Generalist, and precisely why TEA can be a strategic resource to your organization.

I first came across the term from a 2021 article from Culture Amp where author Chloe Jacobs describes the origins and value in the workplace. Immediately it spoke to me, I had finally found a term that could identify with as I looked at my academic and professional career.

More recently, 2 articles in particular have brought the spotlight back to this term, and the emphasis on why Expert Generalists are in higher demand in business today.

An recent article by Martin Fowler & others outline the characteristics that make up an Expert Generalist, as well as assessing and growing the role within organizations. The takeaway:

  • Expert Generalists share several key traits

    • Curiosity

    • Collaborativeness

    • Customer-focus

    • Favoring fundamental knowledge

    • A blend of specialist and generalist skills

    • Sympathy for related domains

  • Teams should blend Expert Generalists with a few key specialists

  • Expert Generalist skills are enhanced by LLMs

  • Expert Generalists ensure complex tasks get done

  • We need to treat Expert Generalist as a first class skill

  • Evaluate people's skill as an Expert Generalist in hiring and promotion

  • Develop training just as much as for specialist skills

In a July Forbes article, CEO Mani Padisetti makes a case for why Expert Generalists thrive in today's workplace due to strategic agility, cross functional communication, and a mastery of AI. He also offers practices to build generalist strength. What resonated with me the most, was  when he states:

"In a business world careening around corners at AI speed, it turns out the jack of all trades may well be the master of the moment…Let’s not forget, even the Swiss Army knife became iconic, not for its singularity, but its versatility".

There are plenty of other articles out there highlighting the benefits of being, characteristics, of, and how to strengthen your skills as an Expert Generalist. Or just reach out.
